Scotland is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom and is located on the northwest of Europe. The country is bordered on the East by the North Sea, on the North and West by the Atlantic Ocean, on the Southwest by the North Channel and Irish Sea. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh which is the largest city of Scotland and is famous as one of the largest financial centers of Europe. The city of Glasgow ranks second to the city of Edinburgh. The country consists of 790 island apart from the main island. The waters of Scotland comprise a large portion of the North Atlantic and the North Sea and boasts one of the largest oil reserves in the European Union.

Scotland had maintained its independent existence till 1707 when following a threat from the English to end trade and free movement, an act was made between the Scots parliament and the Parliament of England known as the Acta of Union and the Kingdom of Great Britain was born.
Scotland was transformed into a commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouse of Europe with the onset of Scottish Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. However, following World War II the country faced a financial decline. But it has regained its former status during the recent years with the onset of a cultural and economic renaissance.
