Scotland is a country lying in the north of the island of Great Britain and is located off the coast of north west Europe. Scotland as a small country has a jagged coastline of 2000 meters. The geography of Scotland tells us that the country shares land border only with England . The Atlantic Ocean lies in the West and the North Sea lies in the East. The country is 30 km away from the country of Ireland and Norway is 400 km away from Scotland. The territorial extent of Scotland is established by the Treaty of York 1237 between England and Scotland and the Treaty of Perth 1266 between Norway and Scotland.

The entire country of Scotland was covered by ice sheets during the Pleistocene ice ages. As a result of large scale glaciation the country was divided into three main geographical subdivisions. The geography of Scotland consists of three principal land regions from North to South namely the Highlands, the Central Lowlands, and the Southern Uplands. The Highlands covers two-thirds of Scotland in the northern part of the country. The principal mountain ranges comprising the geography of Scotland are the Northwest Highlands and the Grampian Mountains. The two mountain ranges are separated by a deep valley named Glen Mor or the Great Glen. The Central Lowlands comprise the best farmland of Scotland. The area is watered by rivers like Clyde, Fourth, and Tay.
The geography of Scotland extends to the climate of Scotland. Scotland experiences a temperate and oceanic climate. Since it is warmed by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic the winters in the country are milder than countries on similar latitudes. The Eastern Scotland is cooler than the Western Scotland since the Western pert of the country receives Atlantic ocean currents. The western Highlands of Scotland is the wettest place but the lowland of Scotland receives much less rainfall.
The geography of Scotland includes 690 islands excepting the main island. A large group of islands called the Hebrides are situated off the coast of the main island of Scotland.
